ACT Women's Register

The ACT Women's Register is for women interested in nominating for appointment to ACT Government and non-Government boards, committees and statutory authorities

Why enrol on the ACT Women's Register, and how to do it

Women's involvement in Decision Making
Boards and committees are more effective and efficient if their membership reflects the composition of the communities they serve. Diversity in the membership allows those bodies to operate more effectively and make comprehensive decisions.

Women make up just over half of the ACT population. It is vital that they are encouraged and supported to participate and contribute at all levels in the community and in particular, as part of decision-making bodies.

What is the ACT Women's Register?
The Register is a database containing information provided by women who have indicated an interest in nominating for appointment to ACT Government and non-Government boards and committees. It is held by the ACT Office for Women, Chief Minister's Department.

How does the Register work?
ACT Government agencies and non-Government organisations can make a request through the ACT Office for Women for information on women who have relevant qualifications, experience and/or expertise for a particular board or committee vacancy.

Once the request is received, the Office for Women search the Register to find those women who fit the provided criteria. The information about those women will then be forwarded to the requester for consideration as a candidate for the vacancy.

What can you expect if you are appointed to a board or committee?
If you become a member of a board or committee you will be required to contribute by undertaking a range of duties and responsibilities, which include:

  • attending meetings;
  • contributing to decision making and problem solving;
  • maintaining confidentiality; and
  • contributing knowledge and understanding and commitment to the purpose of the board.

You may also be asked to interpret or analyse technical material and/or financial data and in some cases provide specialist knowledge. Your membership will also provide you with the opportunity to use your knowledge and skills in new arenas and to have input to important decisions.
