March 8 is International Women's Day (IWD). Around the world IWD marks a celebration of the acheivements of women.
IWD provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the significant contributions of women, and the legacy left by earlier generations.
The day is also an occasion to inspire commitment to the future challenges that women face in making further progress.
In the ACT, part of the IWD celebrations include the ACT International Women's Day Awards. The Awards are presented by the Minister for Women.
There are two Award categories:

The ACT Office for Women acknowledges the continued sponsorship of ActewAGL for the 2005 International Women's Day Awards.
13 remarkable Canberra women were honoured in the 2004 ACT International Women’s Day Awards.
At the Awards Ceremony, Minister for Women Katy Gallagher presented two categories of awards, the Women's Awards for women who have made outstanding contributions in public life, and the Community Award for individuals, groups and organisations working to progress the status of women in the ACT.
The recipients of the four Women’s Awards were:
Mary Sexton
Mary has been an advocate for women for over 30 years. She has made an outstanding contribution to a wide range of community organisations and groups. Mary has worked on a number of Advisory Councils and was instrumental in the establishment of the first National Women's Advisory Council. Mary is a lifetime member of the Women's Electoral Lobby.
Dennise Simpson
Dennise has worked for 20 years to support women experiencing violence. She played a leading role in establishing The Domestic Violence Crisis Service in 1988. Dennise has worked tirelessley for the service since this time. She has also served on a number of committees that have influenced domestic violence reforms.
Ros Brown
Ros has worked to progress social justice issues for Indigenous people. Ros has been an active member on a number of Councils and has recently been appointed Chair of the Indigenous Working Group whose role is to strengthen partnerships between the Commonwealth, ACT Government and ATSIC. Ros worked in partnership with the ACT Government to establish the Ngunnawal Elders Council. This provides an avenue for the Ngunnawal people to raise issues of concern with the ACT Government. Ros is committed to reconciliation and strives to make people more aware of the issue of concern for Indigenous people in Canberra.
Emiliana Afeaki
Emiliana has made an outstanding contribution to the Canberra multicultural community. She has been instrumental in promoting and involving migrant women in the child care industry. Emiliana has assisted migrant women find emplyment. As the President of the Tongan Association she has raised the profile of the Tongan comunity.
Maria Santos
The recipient of the Community Award was Maria Santos for improving the quality of life for Spanish women. Maria has voluntarily called bingo every Saturday and Sunday afternoon for the last 17 years. This has provided a valuable social activity for Spanish elderly women in their 70s and 80s. Maria provides an opportunity for women to get together, and share their experiences.
This year the Minister for Women Katy Gallagher presented a further category of awards to 8 women. Highly commended awards on the day were presented to Brindabella Trefoil Guild, Elizabeth Halfnights, Heather Wain, Cathi Moore, Colleen Brandstetter, Inanna Inc, Women in Black and Dragons Abreast.
The 2004 ACT International Women's Day Awards were sponsored by ActewAGL and the Canberra Centre.
